Kelley’s Therapy Office Story: Creating Space for Therapy, Creativity, and Connection

Therapy office with white couch and blue pillows

Many private practice owners have probably come across Kelley Stevens, LMFT on social media. She helps therapists build their private practices and for this post, she’s sharing an inside peek into how her therapy office space has evolved over the years. Like many of us, Kelley’s therapy office evolved over time based on her needs which is helpful to remember as we get started on our own therapy office spaces. Pick pieces you love and be open to change. Now here’s Kelley’s story:

From Traditional Offices to Home-Based Spaces

When I first started as a therapist, like so many of us, I worked out of traditional therapy offices. I’ve rented spaces in office buildings, shared suites with colleagues, and decorated tiny rooms on a shoestring budget to make them feel welcoming. At every stage, my focus was the same: I wanted my clients to feel safe, cozy, and cared for the second they stepped into my space.

But, as life does, things shifted. Becoming a mom, navigating business ownership, and then living through the pandemic meant that I had to adapt. Like many therapists, I transitioned to virtual therapy, seeing clients online from my home. At first, this felt like a huge adjustment, but over time, I came to love the flexibility it offered. My office no longer had to fit just one role—it became the center of my therapy practice, my creative studio, and my work as a Private Practice coach teaching therapists how to open private practices.

My Office Today

These days, all of my therapy clients see me virtually, and my home office has become the hub of my world. It’s where I record videos for YouTube, host webinars, create online courses, and coach therapists who are launching their own practices. It’s also where I run Private Practice Pro, a platform dedicated to teaching therapists how to open private practices with confidence and clarity.

And here’s the fun part: I share this office with my husband. A few years ago, we designed the space together, and it’s become one of my favorite corners of our home.

Designing a Space That Works for Everything

When you wear as many hats as I do—therapist, mom, business owner, content creator, and Private Practice coach—your office has to work overtime. I wanted it to feel calming for therapy sessions but also polished and professional for filming content. At the same time, it had to be practical because, well, life with kids means messes and chaos!

During the pandemic, we remodeled the space, and one of the biggest choices we made was adding felt tiles to the walls. Why? Because with family life in the mix, practicality matters. Another choice was adding a pull-out couch. This lets the space double as a guest room when family visits, but it also makes a great cozy background for therapy sessions or videos where I’m teaching therapists how to open private practices. My goal is always to create a space that feels warm, welcoming, and versatile.

Why My Office Matters So Much

To some people, an office is just a desk and a computer. But to me, it’s where everything I do comes together:

  • It’s where I meet clients for therapy and hold space for their stories.
  • It’s where I coach therapists one-on-one and guide them step by step as they open their private practices.
  • It’s where I brainstorm new course ideas and record lessons that help therapists start and grow their businesses.
  • It’s where I film YouTube videos and Instagram reels to connect with a community of therapists looking for support and guidance.

Because I share the office with my husband, it’s also a space where we collaborate on life together—balancing work, family, and everything in between.

Lessons I’ve Learned About Creating an Office Space

If you’re a therapist, a content creator, or someone thinking about starting your own practice, here are a few lessons I’ve learned about creating a space that supports your goals:

  • Prioritize comfort. Whether you’re meeting therapy clients or creating online content, people can feel the energy of your space. Warm lighting, plants, and soft textures go a long way.
  • Think multipurpose. Your office doesn’t have to serve just one role. Mine doubles as a guest room, a therapy office, and a filming studio.
  • Invest in tech. Good lighting, microphones, and a reliable internet connection are essentials for anyone offering virtual therapy or online coaching.
  • Personalize it. Surround yourself with items that inspire you—art, books, or photos that remind you why you’re doing this work.
  • Stay flexible. As life changes—kids grow, businesses evolve, and pandemics happen—your office should grow with you.

Why I Share This

I share my office story not because I think you should recreate it, but because I believe our workspaces reflect the lives we’re building. For me, my office is the place where I get to be a therapist, a creator, and a Private Practice coach teaching therapists how to open private practices that fit their lives.

My hope is that by giving you this little behind-the-scenes look, you’ll feel inspired to create a space that supports your own growth, whether you’re just starting out or you’re years into your career.

Final Thoughts

When I look around my office, I don’t just see furniture and equipment. I see a space that has carried me through transitions: from in-person sessions to virtual therapy, from being a new mom to balancing business ownership, and from therapist to Private Practice coach.

This office is more than walls and a desk. It’s a space where I help clients heal, help therapists grow, and create resources for people just like you who want to step into private practice with confidence.

If you’re curious about how to build a practice that feels fulfilling, flexible, and aligned with your life, I’d love to connect with you over at Private Practice Pro. Because whether it’s therapy sessions, coaching, or online teaching, my mission is the same: to empower therapists to design lives and businesses they love.

After all, our offices aren’t just spaces—they’re reflections of the futures we’re creating.
